About Us

The Radnorshire Wildlife Trust (RWT) is one of the youngest wildlife trusts in the UK. Established in 1987 as a volunteer only group we have grown to an organisation with an annual budget of some £100,000, now having 19 reserves across the county covering a range of habitats from woodland to moorland, wetland to meadow. Where possible, RWT has an open access policy to allow enjoyment of the reserves for all. Even those with some restrictions are accessible in part or at certain times of the year.

The Trust undertakes a wide range of work including:

  • General management of reserves with the assistance of a team of volunteers
  • Developing a network of private nature reserves, an innovative project which provides a self-help group for smallholders who otherwise would get little or no assistance in managing their land for wildlife
  • Surveys of vulnerable and endangered species
  • Liaison with landowners on good conservation management
  • Providing events throughout the year, including talks, children’s events and exhibitions, all centred on wildlife and conservation
  • A range of educational activities many of which are delivered at our visitor centre - Gilfach Nature Discovery Centre.

Throughout its history the Trust has actively promoted environmental education and action for wildlife by local people and has built up considerable knowledge and experience. In recent years we have made significant improvements to access and facilities at our 418 acre Gilfach Farm reserve and have developed an important environmental educational, interpretation and visitor resource.

Between 2000 & 2004 ten of the reserves have benefited from a programme of capital works to enhance management and access, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Between 1997 & 1999 the Trust carried out an innovative biodiversity audit of its nature reserves, also supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The Trust’s main office and shop is in Llandrindod Wells. There is a further shop at Gilfach Nature Reserve. The Trust operates throughout Radnorshire. THE SHOP AT WARWICK HOUSE IS OPEN TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS 10.00 - 1.00, AND AT OTHER TIMES IF STAFF OR VOLUNTEERS ARE AVAILABLE
