Gilfach Longhouse which is built of local rubble stone with timber-framed gables to the east, stands on a platformed site cut into the hillside which slopes to the west towards the Afon Marteg. A well is situated next to the house providing the traditional water supply for both people & animals - perhaps accounting for the original siting of the house.

The main body of the house is sited down the face of the hill with an additional wing being added to the top end of the house across the slope.

The present storeyed, longhouse appears originally to have been of late medieval 'A' frame cruck construction & timber framed walls with 'wattle & daub' infill.

A medieval hall type house open to the roof, of a pattern not uncommon in the area. Surviving features from the period include one partially intact 'A' frame, the base of another cruck, the cross piece of a third 'A' frame & a well preserved example of a Welsh post & panel screen.
