Popular TV wildlife presenter Iolo Williams took the question-master’s chair for the grand final of the Radnorshire Wildlife Trust’s annual Schools Wildlife Challenge Quiz.

Teams from Gladestry, Knighton, Newbridge-on-Wye and Radnor Valley had been victorious against other Radnorshire schools in the preliminary rounds and semi-finals. They competed for the championship trophy at a special end-of-term event held at the Wildlife Trust’s Nature Discovery Centre at Gilfach.

Iolo had flown in from filming in the Amazon rainforest at four o’clock the very same day, but if he felt jet-lagged it didn’t show in his lively performance as question-master.

After the first two rounds the scores were very close. The children then went outdoors to try for extra points in four wildlife games.

While the quiz organiser, the Wildlife Trust’s People and Wildlife Officer Suzie Fraser, totted up the final scores, the competitors relieved the tension with chocolate cake and squash.

All was hushed as Iolo announced the results. All four teams had gained high scores, but the champions were Knighton – by just two points from runners-up Newbridge.

Knighton gain the right to hold the Baughan Trophy for the year – a leaping salmon beautifully carved from Gilfach hawthorn. They immediately christened this Sam Salmon!

Presenting certificates and prizes to all the teams, Iolo told them how impressed he was with their knowledge. He said that when he was a boy his classmates had thought him strange because he was interested in wildlife. He only got away with it because he was a big lad for his age!

The quiz aims to enthuse children and increase their understanding of wildlife. The Radnorshire Wildlife Trust is grateful for the support of the Countryside Council for Wales for the quiz through its Partnership Programme with the Trust.
