Radnorshire Wildlife Trust’s new
People and Wildlife Officer Suzie Fraser has got the annual Wildlife
Quiz off to a flying start
in Radnorshire Primary Schools. Fourteen teams have taken part
in the competition for the winning title, and the final will take
place
on July 18th at the Gilfach Nature Reserve, with TV Wildlife Presenter
Iolo Williams in the chair as Quiz Master. The
quiz helps to raise the children’s awareness of wildlife
and countryside issues and encourages an attitude of care for our
local environment.
The battle of wits started in March of this year and many of the
competitions were very close, with all the teams showing a great
deal of knowledge. In the first rounds Knighton, Newbridge, Gladestry,
Ffynnon Gynydd, Clyro, Whitton, New Radnor and Beguildy schools
all went through to the semi-final, and commiserations went to
Presteigne, Rhayader, Cefnllys, Rhosgoch, Trefonnen and Nantmel
schools. Slogging it out in the final will be Knighton, Newbridge,
Gladestry and New Radnor teams.
Suzie Fraser, organiser of the quiz, said: “It was such
an exciting contest, often very close, and really good fun. We
covered lots of different areas of wildlife knowledge. As well
as testing their knowledge, we tried to give them knowledge – testing
their observation and listening skills.”
“Many thanks to Bronwen Jenkins and Barbara Vesey who helped
out as Quiz Masters, and a message to all Radnorshire Primary Schools – do
take part next year, it’s good fun and the children get a
lot out of it.”
Suzie took up her job with Radnorshire Wildlife Trust in February,
having been Education Officer at the Primrose Earth Awareness Trust
near Hay on Wye previously.
